The Redeemer Choir and Canticum Novum
The Choirs of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer have long contributed to the rich diversity of sacred music in Atlanta while maintaining an all-volunteer membership. In addition to weekly service music, they have performed major works including Handel’s Messiah and Dettingen Te Deum, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Faure’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, “Coronation” Mass, and Solemn Vespers of the Confessor, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Schubert’s Mass in G, Vierne’s Messe Solennelle, Schütz’ Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross and Bach's Passion according to St. John and numerous motets and cantatas.
The Carillon Ringers - Sarah Hawbecker, Director
The Carillon Ringers is Redeemer’s adult handbell choir, playing five octaves of handbells and chimes. Its eleven members regularly lead worship at Redeemer, playing preludes and hymn and anthem accompaniments. The group performs an annual Christmas concert, has performed multiple times for the Lighting of the Christmas Tree at the Governor’s Mansion in Atlanta, and attends festivals throughout the southeast.
Sarah Hawbecker, Organ and Piano
Sarah Hawbecker has served as Organist and Director of Music for Children and Youth at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta since 1996. She is an active recitalist, full-time church musician, and winner of numerous competitions. She is the third prize winner of both the 1998 and 1996 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance. She was a finalist in the 1992 Spivey International Competition, won first place in the 1988 Undergraduate Organ Competition, Ottumwa, Iowa, and second place in the 1991 Southeastern Regional AGO Competition. Ms. Hawbecker has concertized throughout the Midwest and the Southeast. Her performances have been recorded and broadcast on National Public Radio’s program Pipedreams. She has performed recitals for three different regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists, and served as adjudicator for several organ competitions. She has served in various capacities in the American Guild of Organists, including multiple terms on the National Council as Councillor for Region IV. She also presents workshops on various Guild and church music topics throughout the region.
Ms. Hawbecker earned the Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree, Magna cum laude with Departmental Distinction, from St. Olaf College. Her main teachers were Russell Saunders and John Ferguson, and she has also studied and coached with Michael Corzine and Larry Smith.
David Hansen, Director
David Hansen has served as Director of Adult Choral Activities at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer since December 2001. An Atlanta native, he began conducting while a student at Grady High School and has conducted for more than 40 years. He studied at Duke University, Georgia State University and Candler School of Theology of Emory University, though his most significant musical education has come through his long membership in the choruses of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. As a musician, he has served on the staffs of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church and The Salvation Army.
